What are social enterprises?

Social enterprises trade in the market to primarily achieve social aims, which they prioritise above the need to maximise profit. They employ ethical business practices and benefit society through reinvesting surpluses and/or addressing social issues within the community.*Social enterprises have a strong foundation and a broad base that includes co-operatives and fair trade organisations.

The DTI has recognised their growing role in the UK economy by launching the Social Enterprise Unit. Social enterprises can be found across the world and many have been established in North America.

Who are social entrepreneurs? Social entrepreneurs are individuals with the passion, vision and drive to establish social enterprises. They develop sustainable solutions to social problems and focus on good governance and responsible decision-making as part of their ethical business practice.
