Telling your children you’re going to split up can be a daunting task. It may be something you have been considering for a while, or it may be quite sudden, but either way it is one of the most difficult conversations for a parent to face.

There is no easy way to tell your children and there are no hard and fast rules. Every family is different and much depends on the relationships between family members before the separation. However, there are steps you can take to make the whole experience as positive as it can be.

How much child maintenance might you pay or receive

If you'd like to know how much maintenance you might pay or receive, you can use the calculator on the Child Maintenance Options website.

To use the calculator you'll need to know:

* the non-resident parent's net weekly income (there's an online tool to help you work this out)
* the number of children the maintenance is to be paid for
* the number of nights, on average, the non-resident parent has the child for each year
* the number of other children living in the non-resident parent's household

The calculator can give you an indication of the amount of maintenance that might be payable with an arrangement through the Child Support Agency.
